Apologies in advance if this seems like a one off comment since the team did their extensive research, and I'm just passing by after watching the two minutes here but if I could make a suggestion of sorts (based on some things I've seen elsewhere) To preface One issue with terrain is the sheer unpredictability of the path, which of course lends itself to the esteem of the sport in being able to solve the present challenge when encountered. With a quad-wheel design, balance shifting would be difficult as I imagine, as opposed to something more bi-pedal Which leads to the issue of 'contact points' with the ground as such, I would recommend looking into the following functions for further inspiration I would hope these concepts may help further assist your team's ideas moving forward - Mountain Goats (biological kinetics) - "Salto del pastor"-translated from Spanish as "the shepherd's leap" [ Traditional mountain pole vaulting, used by shepards while taking their sheep to graze on rugged mountain tops, now made sport. Do dig up as much videos as you can find to fully grasp the concept. I don't think there's any papers out there on it in English. ] - "Rolligon" Rolls To It! (1953) [ a video you can search up here on YT, features a very interesting all terrain 'roller' capable of rolling over a human safely & leaving little marks on the wild while ferrying a heavy load ] - Continuous track treads ( yes, like the ones tanks utilize. There are many variations, some have been fitted to '4-wheeler' type vehicles before as too! Rubber is also a material type that can be used.) - The basketball wheelchair design ( wheels are splayed out, allowing for amazing in-place on the spot pivoting maneuverability, on top of speed across the court! Really recommend you give it a go yourself if the opportunity ever presents itself!! Good firsthand experience to understand the design behind it. ) - Mechanisms of canoeing & kayaking. These are modes of transport that requires sitting & balancing with the aid of a long pole like tool. There is definitely an idea here if you think hard enough about it. ] and one taken from experience having walked through all sorts of uncertain rugged terrain though I am able-bodied I've found it's amazingly easier to ascend a steep incline with your back facing the terrain, as though you're on a ledge, except you're moving upwards (ideally, or horizontally for ease of ascent) It's so much easier to breathe, the footing feels so stable it's almost like walking with your back against the wind in a storm. Has that kind of stable comfort to it. I imagine ankle positioning & weight distribution being that much more efficient would be the reasoning for it. Just something I thought I'd throw in there for good measure. Would hope for development to be able to do it all; off road muddy conditions, mountain, forests, bodies of water, snow, and storms! Don't forget to sometimes take a step back n' think back to the basics of 'Simple Machines'. A wedge & lever seem key here.
